Favourite Moments from Fuerteventura

The first thing that catches my eye is not the azure waters and white sandy beaches of Fuertevenura, but rather the arty typography tiles that adorn the front of each and every rustic island dwelling in front of dramatic landscapes.

To be honest, just between you and me, I had my preconceptions about the Canary Islands. But after this trip, I learned that it was time to pack up those old views and to embrace the new hip atmosphere that is making these secluded volcanic islands into everyone’s new favourite winter sun destinations. I just can’t wait to tell you guys about it!

Only 4 hours by flight from London’s airports, you can be from office to beach during the course of one afternoon. (Not to mention the 20+ degrees temperature difference in January!)

We stayed at the Gran Hotel Atlantis Bahía Real, filled with an interesting combination of rustic charm and modern technology. It was complete with epic sized continental hot buffet breakfasts, heated swimming pool, private chartered boat rides to Lobo island (an even smaller and quieter island nearby), fully-equipped gym, morning yoga classes on the beach, and dreamy balinese beds looking into the sea. (More on that later.)

Embracing the true Canarian lifestyle, I spent some days finding one secluded power-sand beaches after the next, and looked into the distant clear blue ocean in deep meditation. While on other days, I explored the nearby pretty villages of honey-coloured houses on the island and feasting on fresh local seafood smothered in flavourful Mojo sauce. I’ll put my favourite spots in a separate post for you guys for reference.

There are bike lanes everywhere on this island, which made exploring even more fun. It was my first time biking into the rolling hills of sand dunes in true Indiana Jones style.

There were also runners everywhere. The soft powdery sand made this coastline the best treadmills with a view. Some of these locals definitely put me to shame on their fitness levels and sporting various shades of toasted tan.

Summer may be just a distant memory in England, but down here, it’s life as usual with the mercury hovering above 22ºC everyday. Packing your bikini is essential. ???? Here are some of my favourite ones, as I’m a big fan of those nautical stripes!

Which one of the Canary Islands is your favourite? ????
